Mastering Basic Tenses: The Key to Fluent English

What Are Tenses?

- Future Tense: Actions that will happen in the future.
Each of these tenses has four forms:
- Simple
- Continuous
- Perfect
- Perfect Continuous
Present Tense (موجودہ زمانہ)
1. Simple Present Tense
English Explanation:
The simple present tense is used for habits, general truths, and actions that happen regularly.
Structure:
- Subject + base verb (+ s/es for third-person singular).
Examples:
- I go to school every day.
- She writes a letter every week.
Urdu Explanation:
سادہ حال زمانہ روزمرہ کے معمولات، عام سچائیوں، یا بار بار ہونے والے کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + بنیادی فعل (+ s/es واحد حاضر کے لیے)۔
Examples in Urdu:
- میں روز سکول جاتا ہوں۔
- وہ ہر ہفتے ایک خط لکھتی ہے۔
2. Present Continuous Tense
English Explanation:
The present continuous tense describes actions happening right now or ongoing actions.
Structure:
- Subject + is/am/are + verb(+ing).
Examples:
- I am reading a book.
- They are playing football.
Urdu Explanation:
موجودہ جاری زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو اس وقت ہو رہے ہوں۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + is/am/are + فعل(+ing)۔
Examples in Urdu:
- میں کتاب پڑھ رہا ہوں۔
- وہ فٹ بال کھیل رہے ہیں۔
3. Present Perfect Tense
English Explanation:
The present perfect tense is used to describe actions completed recently or that have a connection to the present.
Structure:
- Subject + has/have + past participle.
Examples:
- She has finished her homework.
- I have visited Paris.
Urdu Explanation:
موجودہ کامل زمانہ حال ہی میں مکمل ہونے والے کاموں یا موجودہ حالات سے جڑے کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + has/have + ماضی کا حصہ۔
Examples in Urdu:
- اس نے اپنا ہوم ورک مکمل کر لیا ہے۔
- میں پیرس جا چکا ہوں۔
4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense
English Explanation:
This tense is used to show actions that started in the past and are still continuing.
Structure:
- Subject + has/have been + verb(+ing).
Examples:
- He has been working here since 2015.
- They have been studying for two hours.
Urdu Explanation:
موجودہ کامل جاری زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو ماضی میں شروع ہوئے اور اب بھی جاری ہیں۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + has/have been + فعل(+ing)۔
Examples in Urdu:
- وہ 2015 سے یہاں کام کر رہا ہے۔
- وہ دو گھنٹوں سے پڑھائی کر رہے ہیں۔
Past Tense (ماضی)
1. Simple Past Tense
English Explanation:
The simple past tense is used for actions that happened and finished in the past.
Structure:
- Subject + past verb.
Examples:
- I watched a movie yesterday.
- She visited her grandmother last week.
Urdu Explanation:
سادہ ماضی زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو ماضی میں ہو چکے ہیں۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + ماضی کا فعل۔
Examples in Urdu:
- میں نے کل ایک فلم دیکھی۔
- وہ پچھلے ہفتے اپنی دادی کے پاس گئی۔
2. Past Continuous Tense
English Explanation:
The past continuous tense describes actions that were ongoing at a specific time in the past.
Structure:
- Subject + was/were + verb(+ing).
Examples:
- I was reading a book when you called.
- They were playing football at 6 PM.
Urdu Explanation:
ماضی جاری زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو ماضی میں کسی وقت جاری تھے۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + was/were + فعل(+ing)۔
Examples in Urdu:
- جب تم نے فون کیا، میں کتاب پڑھ رہا تھا۔
- وہ شام 6 بجے فٹ بال کھیل رہے تھے۔
3. Past Perfect Tense
English Explanation:
The past perfect tense is used for actions that were completed before another action in the past.
Structure:
- Subject + had + past participle.
Examples:
- She had finished her homework before dinner.
- They had left by the time I arrived.
Urdu Explanation:
ماضی کامل زمانہ ماضی میں کسی دوسرے کام سے پہلے مکمل ہونے والے کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + had + ماضی کا حصہ۔
Examples in Urdu:
- اس نے رات کے کھانے سے پہلے اپنا ہوم ورک مکمل کر لیا تھا۔
- جب میں پہنچا تو وہ جا چکے تھے۔
4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
English Explanation:
This tense describes actions that started in the past and continued up to another point in the past.
Structure:
- Subject + had been + verb(+ing).
Examples:
- He had been working there for two years before he left.
- They had been playing football since morning.
Urdu Explanation:
ماضی کامل جاری زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو ماضی میں شروع ہوئے اور کسی دوسرے ماضی کے نقطہ تک جاری رہے۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + had been + فعل(+ing)۔
Examples in Urdu:
- وہ دو سال سے وہاں کام کر رہا تھا جب اس نے چھوڑ دیا۔
- وہ صبح سے فٹ بال کھیل رہے تھے۔
Future Tense (مستقبل)
1. Simple Future Tense
English Explanation:
The simple future tense is used for actions that will happen in the future.
Structure:
- Subject + will/shall + base verb.
Examples:
- I will go to the market tomorrow.
- She will call you later.
Urdu Explanation:
سادہ مستقبل زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو مستقبل میں ہوں گے۔

- فاعل + will/shall + بنیادی فعل۔
Examples in Urdu:
- میں کل مارکیٹ جاؤں گا۔
- وہ تمہیں بعد میں کال کرے گی۔
2. Future Continuous Tense

Examples:
- I will be reading a book at 8 PM.
- They will be playing football tomorrow afternoon.
Urdu Explanation:
مستقبل جاری زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو مستقبل میں کسی وقت جاری ہوں گے۔

- فاعل + will/shall be + فعل(+ing)۔
Examples in Urdu:
- میں رات 8 بجے کتاب پڑھ رہا ہوں گا۔
- وہ کل دوپہر فٹ بال کھیل رہے ہوں گے۔
3. Future Perfect Tense
English Explanation:
The future perfect tense is used for actions that will be completed before a specific time in the future.
Structure:
- Subject + will/shall have + past participle.
Examples:
- She will have finished her homework by 6 PM.
- They will have left by the time we arrive.
Urdu Explanation:
مستقبل کامل زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو مستقبل میں کسی وقت سے پہلے مکمل ہو چکے ہوں گے۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + will/shall have + ماضی کا حصہ۔
Examples in Urdu:
- وہ شام 6 بجے تک اپنا ہوم ورک مکمل کر چکی ہوگی۔
- جب ہم پہنچیں گے، وہ جا چکے ہوں گے۔
4. Future Perfect Continuous Tense
English Explanation:
This tense describes actions that will have been ongoing for some time before a specific point in the future.
Structure:
- Subject + will/shall have been + verb(+ing).
Examples:
- He will have been working there for five years by next June.
- They will have been studying for three hours by noon.
Urdu Explanation:
مستقبل کامل جاری زمانہ ان کاموں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے جو مستقبل میں کسی وقت تک جاری رہے ہوں گے۔
ساخت:
- فاعل + will/shall have been + فعل(+ing)۔
Examples in Urdu:
- وہ اگلے جون تک وہاں پانچ سال سے کام کر رہا ہوگا۔
- وہ دوپہر تک تین گھنٹے سے پڑھ رہے ہوں گے۔
